Song Recital – Sam Poppleton and David Halls

Sam Poppleton (baritone) and David Halls (piano) perform Vaughan Williams’s Songs of Travel and Schumann’s Dichterliebe.  Schumann’s 1840 cycle, Dichterliebe draws texts for the 16 songs from Heinrich Heine’s Lyrisches Intermezzo.  The poet’s evolving ideas of love are represented as flowers, dreams and fairy-tales.  In his Songs of Travel, Vaughan Williams sets the poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson in a cycle that, although it echoes the German lieder tradition and the archetypal Romantic wanderer, seeks to discover the self through the act of travel.
